Fianna Fáil candidate Jim Gavin has announced his withdrawal from the Irish presidential election right away.

He was poised to be a candidate among three competing for Ireland's head of state, alongside TD Catherine Connolly and Heather Humphreys of Fine Gael.

However, on Sunday evening he said through a declaration that he "committed an error which did not align with his character and his personal standards."

"After weighing these points, I've chosen to leave the presidential election contest immediately and return to the arms of my family," he stated in his announcement.

More to follow.
